About Cortlandt

The town of Cortlandt occupies the northwest corner of Westchester County, between the Hudson River to the west and the town of Yorktown to the east, and wraps around the City of Peekskill. Cortlandt includes two villages, Buchanan and Croton-on-Hudson, and three hamlets, Verplanck, Montrose and Crugers.

Buchanan has a population of about 2,000 and lies just west of Route 9A on the banks of the Hudson. Its village circle conveys small-town charm, while its main street, Broadway, leads down to the river and to the hamlet of Verplank. At the northern part of town is a waterfront park with a small boat ramp and areas for picnicking and fishing.

Verplanck is nestled right on the river’s shore at what was once the site of King’s Ferry, a major river crossing during and after the American Revolution. The hamlet rests at the river end of Broadway and has numerous older structures and a picturesque historic charm. Verplanck is now home to two of the area’s largest marinas, Viking Boat Yard and Hudson Valley Marine. Riverside parks abound and provide scenic sites for picnicking and recreation.

Montrose is located just south of Verplanck. It, too, is a small river hamlet with quiet residential neighborhoods surrounding a small business district on Route 9A. Its waterfront is enhanced by George’s Island Park, which provides picnic and other recreational areas, plus a launching ramp for small boats. The Montcor Marina is also located in Montrose.
