About Peekskill New York
The City of Peekskill has a solid stock of affordable housing, great views of the Hudson River, a vibrant downtown offering art, entertainment and fine dining . . . all within a one-hour train ride to midtown Manhattan.
Peekskill’s downtown has experienced an exceptional rebirth, with an emphasis on the arts and small businesses. There are murals along the downtown streets and artists lofts and studios can be seen on upper floors. Specialty bakers, coffee shops, fine restaurants, art galleries and craft studios abound.
Of special pride within the community is the Paramount Theater for the Performing Arts. Built in 1930, it is now a home for small theater productions and concerts by performers such as Joan Baez.
Peekskill is home to a Westchester Community College campus and the Mercy College extension, and the Hudson Valley Hospital Center is nearby on Rt. 202. The Peekskill Library has 80,000 volumes with access to many more through the Westchester Interlibrary Loan System.
The Peekskill School District has four elementary schools, one middle school and the Peekskill High School. The student/teacher ratio is 10/1 with an average class size of 20 students. Of the high school seniors, 65% take the SATs and 83% go on to further education after graduation.
Affordable homes, many in classic Victorian style, abound in Peekskill, and some offer spectacular views of the Hudson.
Peekskill also provides excellent recreational opportunities, starting with the river for boating and other sports, as well as visits from tall ships. Parks offer tranquil retreats, ball fields, boating, and other activities, while the downtown area is host to a number of festivals and public events. The Blue Mountain Reservation on Peekskill’s southern boundary provides over 1,000 acres of wilderness for walking and hiking, as well as a riding stable.
This historic area has given birth to many famous Americans, including the present Governor and literary greats such as Washington Irving and Frank Baum. West Point is across the river, a short drive away. You will enjoy this friendly community in the heart of the beautiful and historic Hudson Valley. |
