About the Town of Yorktown New York:
The Town of Yorktown’s rolling hills surround the pristine lakes of the Croton Watershed with woodland parks, residential areas, farms and light industry. Four public school districts serve the town and all are highly rated, with a student/teacher ratio of 13/1 and an average class size of 23. Ninety-five percent of seniors take the SATs with 93% going on to college. There are also private schools: six nursery schools, a Montessori school for nursery through elementary, and St. Patrick’s School for grades K through 8.
Yorktown has extensive recreational facilities with over 1400 acres of town and state parks; five miles of the 22-mile North County Trailway bike and pedestrian path; one of the county’s largest nature preserves at Teatown Lake Reservation; and two 18-hole public golf courses.
The town’s Cultural and Community Center in the village of Yorktown Heights offers a 600-seat theater (home of the Yorktown Stage theater group); senior citizen gathering places; a gymnasium, a teen center, and the Yorktown Museum. The town’s J.C. Hart Library in Shrub Oak (at right) is a treasured asset housing more than 100,000 volumes with access to many more through the Westchester Interlibrary Loan system.
The community atmosphere in Yorktown is family oriented, offering excellent education; multi-generational recreational opportunities; and twelve houses of worship. Ample shopping is available in the business centers of the town’s hamlets, and also at the Jefferson Valley Mall and other nearby shopping centers.
The Taconic State Parkway is a major north/south artery in Yorktown, while the nearby Hudson River line allows one-hour access to midtown Manhattan.
Four hospitals serve Yorktown: Westchester Medical Center, a renowned facility located in Valhalla; Phelps Memorial in Sleepy Hollow, and Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco are all about 20 minutes away.
Notable businesses in Yorktown include IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Guiding Eyes for the Blind, and Pennysaver Publishing.
